What are Chakras? Chakra is Sanskrit for “wheel” or “disc”; they are commonly considered spinning vortexes or energy centers that influence a person’s wellbeing directly by governing your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. There are 7 major chakras in our bodies which run along our spine.
Names of the 7 Chakras & what does each represents:The seven major chakras within our bodies are depicted most commonly by the colors of the rainbow. Each chakra has it’s own name and presides over the different mental, spiritual, and even physical areas of the body.
The Root Chakra “Maladhara” – The 1st Chakra, represented by the color red and located at the base of the spine, it connects into earth’s energy; stable, supportive, and grounding. Physically this chakra corresponds with organs such as the gonads, small intestine, and others. When this Chakra is out of balance you may feel yourself physically stumbling a bit, feeling “spacy”, easily losing focus and even causes anxiety.
The Sacral Chakra “Svadhistana” – The 2nd Chakra, represented by the color orange is located slightly below your naval. This chakra gives you the qualities of water; fluid, flowing and sensual. It also parallels the pleasures of life: sexuality, creativity, and trust. Physically this chakra corresponds with kidneys, bladder, and others. When this chakra is out of balance you may feel yourself creatively stuck, struggling with intimacy or even with addictions.
The Solar Plexus Chakra “Manipura” – The 3rd Chakra, represented by the color yellow is located in the solar plexus region (between your naval and sternum) of the body. This is the chakra associated with who you are at your core, your internal fire. Physically this chakra corresponds with your adrenal glands, stomach, etc. When this chakra is out of balance you may struggle with your self-esteem and even depression or anger.

This chakra is your relationship to air, holding and making space, is your connection to others as well as self-love. Physically this chakra corresponds with your heart as well as your thymus. When it is off balance you may struggle with heart aches both physically and emotionally.
The Throat Chakra “Visuddha” – The 5th Chakra, represented by the color blue is located just above your collar bone at your throat. This chakra is your relationship to sound and is responsible for self-expression (speaking your truth) and healthy communication. Physically this chakra corresponds with your throat and thyroid. If it is off balance you may struggle with sore throats, that lump” in your throat when you aren’t saying what you honestly think or feel, thyroid issues, or even in asking for support.
The Third Eye Chakra “Ajna” – The 6th Chakra, represented by the color indigo located at your brow between your eyes and is sometimes called the Brow Chakra. This chakra is your connection to wisdom and light as well as your intuition, enabling you to see clearly. Physically this chakra corresponds with the pituitary gland and when it is out of balance you may have troubles with your eyes, sinuses, and headaches.
The Crown Chakra “Sahasrara” – The 7th Chakra, represented by the color violet located at the top of your head is your connection to pure consciousness, source, God, and the unity with all that is. Physically this chakra corresponds with your pineal gland and when out of balance you may have troubles sleeping, relaxing, overthinking or even struggle with mental illnesses such as bipolar.
How does energy healing benefit the chakras, overall healing, and wellness?
As humans we are all made up of energy and it is believed that chakras are the bridge in which you can guide your awareness to move the life force energy from earth, and the eternal oneness that connects us all, throughout your body.
Because energy is constantly flowing, during different moments, different days, and even different years of your life your personal chakras can be inactive or overactive causing an imbalance in your energy flow that could manifest into physical ailments due to the physical connections the chakras have in your body.
This is why working with these energy sources, through energy healing, you will aid traditional medicines and other healing modalities to create a fully healthy mind, body, and soul. A couple simple self-healing exercises you can do should you feel your chakras are out of balance would as follows:
*Mindfully Eating the Colors of the Rainbow – Bringing in nutrients from various fruits, veggies and other foods that are in the colors of the rainbow, will charge the chakras that are represented by that color. So, for example you find your root chakra out of balance eating tomatoes, strawberries, or other red foods will help bring you back into balance. Filling each meal with the colors of the chakras, will help bring balance to each on a daily basis as well.
*Mindfully breathing energy into your chakras – Allowing yourself to focus your breath into the location of each chakra will allow you to expand and open up the energy flow that is out of balance. Simply sit quietly and allow your mind to focus on the color and/or location of your out of balance chakra, breathe in allowing the energy to expand opening up space from the blocked energy, much like filling a balloon, and exhale out all of the stagnant negative energy.
