Align & Activate: Why Posture Matters More Than You Think

When most people hear the word posture, they immediately think about standing up straighter or pulling their shoulders back. Even I do that when I am becoming aware of my posture.

The problem when we do that is we tend to overcorrect which makes our chest stick out and our ribs to flair. This causes another type of out of alignment and causes issues in other places.

Our body is meant to support us through out the day in many different postures. We need a body that will be able to always come back to “homebase” with a tall spine, neutral pelvis, and two on the ground. It matters how your body is organized, supported, and working together throughout the day.

In this first installment of the Align & Activate series, we're focusing on one of the most important foundations for movement, strength, and even pelvic floor health: alignment.

The Problem With Modern Posture

Many of us spend our days sitting, scrolling, driving, carrying children, or working at a desk. Over time, our bodies adapt to these positions especially if we are habitually holding poor posture.

We often find ourselves with:

  • Forward head posture
  • Rounded shoulders
  • A tucked or overly arched pelvis
  • Rib flare
  • Tight hips
  • A disconnected core

The result isn't just stiffness or discomfort. Poor alignment can affect how we breathe, how we move, how our muscles function, and even how much pressure is placed on our pelvic floor. As the good ole saying says…”it’s all connected”. It truly is though. Correcting posture can greatly impact other areas of your body.

Before We Strengthen, We Need to Connect
One of the biggest mistakes people make is jumping straight into exercises without first understanding where their body is in space. Imagine trying to build a house on a crooked foundation. The stronger you build, the more compensation patterns become ingrained.

That's why the first step in Align & Activate is awareness. Before we activate muscles, we learn how to find them. Before we strengthen movement patterns, we learn how to align them. This will result in life lasting changes.

Finding Neutral Alignment

During this practice, we explore a few key areas:

The Pelvis

The pelvis acts as the foundation of the spine.

Many people live in either an exaggerated arch (anterior tilt) or a tucked-under position (posterior tilt). Both causing issues if help consistently throughout the day. Our body is supposed to hold these positions throughout the day but what matters is how well we’re able to return to our foundation. By gently rocking between the two, we can begin to find a more neutral position where the body feels balanced and supported.

The Rib Cage
Our ribs and pelvis work together as a team.

When the ribs flare forward, the core often struggles to engage effectively. Learning to soften the ribs and stack them over the pelvis can create a stronger connection through the entire trunk.

The Head and Neck
The average human head weighs around 10-12 pounds. When it drifts forward, the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and upper back must work overtime.

Simply bringing the ears back over the shoulders can help reduce tension and improve breathing mechanics.

The Breath
Breathing is one of the most overlooked components of posture.

A full 360-degree breath allows the rib cage, diaphragm, core, and pelvic floor to work together naturally. Often, improving posture begins with improving the quality of our breath.

Why This Matters for the Pelvic Floor

As a prenatal and pelvic floor yoga instructor, one of the first things I look at is posture.

The pelvic floor doesn't work in isolation.

It responds to pressure, breathing patterns, and the position of the pelvis and rib cage.

When alignment improves, many people notice:

  • Better core engagement
  • Less low back discomfort
  • Easier breathing
  • Reduced feelings of pelvic pressure
  • Improved balance and stability

Align First, Activate Second

The goal of this series isn't perfect posture, although eventually we would like to achieve close to perfect, but today the goal is awareness. When we learn to align our bodies, we create a stronger foundation for movement, strength training, yoga, daily activities, and long-term health. From there, activation becomes more effective because the right muscles are able to do their jobs.

So before you worry about doing more, lifting heavier, or adding another workout to your routine, take a moment to check in:

Where is your pelvis?

Where are your ribs?

How are you breathing?

Can you find a little more balance?

Small adjustments often create the biggest changes.

Your Practice This Week

Spend a few moments each day noticing your posture while sitting watching tv, standing in line at the store, or walking to and from your car.

Instead of trying to force yourself into a "perfect" position, simply become aware of how you're holding yourself and gently explore what a more balanced alignment feels like. Awareness is where change begins. And this is exactly where we start to Align & Activate.
