April is a Season of Opening: I have Movement Tips to Support your Spring Reset!
April is a beautiful reminder that growth is always happening, even when we can’t fully see it yet.
The name April is believed to come from the Latin word aperit, meaning “to open.”
In the northern hemisphere, this month marks the beginning of the growing season. The sun begins to warm the earth, plants awaken, and blossoms start to form. Nature slowly comes back to life.
This seasonal shift is more than just something we observe, it’s something we can participate in.
Spring invites us to open physically, mentally, and emotionally.
It’s a powerful time to reconnect with movement, build strength, and create routines that support our long-term wellbeing.
Just like we sow seeds in the soil, we can begin to plant seeds in our bodies through intentional movement.
Why Spring Is the Perfect Time to Reset Your Movement Routine
After months of colder weather, shorter days, and often more sedentary habits, many people feel stiff, tired, or disconnected from their bodies. Myself included.
Spring is a perfect time for a shift because it offers:
- More daylight and natural energy
- Motivation to spend time outside
- Opportunities to rebuild strength and mobility
- A mental “fresh start” feeling
This makes it an ideal time to shift from simply “getting through winter” to moving with purpose. Are you ready?
The good news is movement in spring doesn’t need to be extreme. It just needs to be consistent, supportive, and sustainable.
Movement Tip #1: Focus on Functional Strength for Longevity
Let me tell you how strength training is more about how you move through your life.
Functional strength supports:
- Bone density
- Joint health
- Balance and stability
- Injury prevention
- Confidence in everyday tasks
This is why I teach mobility, functional strength, and balance in all of my yoga classes to create a functional body into our later years to come.
Simple ways to begin:
- Squats or sit-to-stands from a chair
- Light dumbbell rows- focus on rowing the dumbbell to your hip
- Step-ups- these don’t need to be big. You can use a stool even but make sure whatever it is that it is sturdy.
- Carrying weights or groceries mindfully- farmers carry has so many benefits. Think heavy weights for long stretches. Try not to shrug shoulders.
These movements help your body stay capable as the years go on. This is the foundation of longevity, not just living longer, but living well.
Movement Tip #2: Prioritize Mobility
Before jumping into harder workouts, spring is a great time to restore mobility. Warming your body up become more important every single year that goes by. Take 1-2 minutes to do these exercises.
Try a simple daily flow:
- Neck rolls
- Seated torso circles
- Hip openers (like 90/90 stretch)
- Gentle spinal rotations
- Cat/Cow
Mobility work improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and prepares your body for strength training.
Movement Tip #3: Reconnect With Your Breath and Pelvic Floor
Spring is also a wonderful time to reconnect internally.
Many people hold tension in their breath and core without realizing it.
Intentional breathing can:
- Reduce stress
- Improve posture
- Support pelvic floor health
- Enhance core engagement
- Increase movement efficiency
Try this simple reset:
- Sit comfortably. Maybe consider sitting on a hard surfaces.
- Inhale slowly through your nose.
Feel your rib cage expand. Maybe you notice your pelvic floor pushing into the hard surface. - Exhale gently and imagine lifting through your pelvic floor.
Repeat for 5 breaths.
This awareness can transform how your body moves and feels.
Movement Tip #4: Move Outside When Possible
Nature itself can regulate the nervous system.
Walking outdoors, stretching in sunlight, or doing a short strength session at the park can improve mood, energy, and motivation.
Even with kids, movement can be playful and meaningful:
- Tree pose challenges
- Frog jumps
- Balance games
- Nature walks
These shared moments build both physical health and emotional connection.
Earth Day Reminder: Movement Is Part of Caring for Our Planet
Earth Day in April reminds us that wellness is interconnected.
- When we move more:
- We often spend more time outdoors
- We become more aware of our surroundings
- We model healthy habits for our children
- We strengthen our relationship with nature
Simple kid yoga poses like Tree Pose or Calming Bee Breath can help children feel grounded and connected to the earth.
Movement becomes more than exercise - it becomes a way of participating in life and even bonding with those around you.
Plant Seeds That Support Your Future
I want you to always remember that growth rarely happens overnight. It is built through small, repeated choices that build up over time. Give yourself grace and be proud of every moment you show up for yourself.
- This April, consider:
- Trying a new class
- Adding strength trainingTaking short movement breaks
- Stretching before bed
- Moving with your kids
- Creating space to breathe
Each action is a seed.
Over time, these seeds grow into resilience, confidence, and lasting wellbeing.
Let this season be a reminder that you don’t need to overhaul your life to create change.
You simply need to begin.
Open to new possibilities.
Move with intention.
Trust that what you nurture now will shape the strength and energy you feel in the months ahead.
